Wines of Azerbaijan
One of the oldest winemaking lands in the world: the sunlit valleys of the Caucasus, where the vine has been grown for thousands of years.
Wine thousands of years old
Azerbaijan is one of the oldest winemaking lands on earth. The South Caucasus is considered one of the cradles of wine, and the vine has been cultivated here at least since the 2nd millennium BC: excavations have uncovered jars with the remains of ancient wine.
The warm valleys of Ganja, Shamakhi, Goygol and Ismayilli yield both native and international grape varieties. Over its long history Azerbaijani winemaking has known both flowering and prohibition — and today it is reviving again. This site is about its history, regions, grapes and wineries.
Winemaking in numbers
Wine here is not a drink but the memory of the land, passed from vine to vine.
From vine to glass, as a thousand years ago
Winemaking in Azerbaijan has never been mere production — it is part of the culture, of hospitality and of the bond with the land. In cool cellars the wine matures in oak barrels, continuing a craft thousands of years old here.
